URGENT HELP for the Cucapa/El Mayor - Mexicali Earthquake damage
Today at 3:10am
I am posting this hoping many of you can help the community of El Mayor inhabited by our brothers and sisters of the Cucapa nation which hosted Sub Comandante Marcos in 2006 & a camp and delegation of EZLN Comandantes in 2007. The fishing season in which the Cucapa depend on to be able to sustain themselves for the rest of the year are the months of March, April and May. Due to the recent earthquake who's epicenter was less than 10 miles from the community of El Mayor, they can no longer go out and fish. There has been damage to the roads and routes they used to access the Colorado Delta. Aside from the road damage the delta has flooded making it impossible for ground access ending the fishing season this year.
A group of LA organizers will be visiting the community this coming weekend of April 9-11. If you can do a monetary donation, you can do that via paypal to sales@urbanxic.com - please add a note saying it is a donation for the Cucapa.
It is easier to distribute food than money, so if you can't do a monetary donation, we are taking a truckload of primarily non-perishable foods and some fruits and veggies.
If you're a teacher or student and if possible, it would be a good idea to do a food drive within your own classrooms, student organizations, etc. At this point I would advise against doing a food drive school-wide since at this time we don't have the man power to handle that. Although I do think this one trip won't be enough and would probably need to go back next month if not sooner.
Contact: Joel Garcia @ joelragegarcia@sbcglobal.n et for drop off info.
Please let others know.
For some background on the Cucapa and their situation there was a front-page article in the LA Times back in 2008.
