Sacred Caves of the Caribbean

Cueva Clara, Boriken

According to Taino legend, on the island of Hispanola (Kiskeya/Haiti), in the Caonao region there is a mountain called Cauta that has two caves, Cacibajagua (Cave of the Jagua) and Amayaúna (without importance). The place of origin for the Taino people was Cacibajagua and everyone else came from the other cave.

Caves held special significance and were used in sacred ceremonies and rituals. Throughout the Caribbean are sacred caves with petroglyphs that provide evidence of their ritual use.

Kiskeya (Dominican Republic)

To enter a cave today and see the petroglyphs is a unique experience. There are no museum lights or explanations, just the darkness of the cave and its mystery.

Each petroglyph is a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of the Taino. You can sense the spirit of our ancestors and their connection with the earth. Words cannot express the sensation of awe and profound wonder that you feel when you enter a cave that has special significance.

Cueva del Indo, Las Piedras, Boriken

We do not know of any complete listing of all the caves in the Caribbean, both privately-held and in public parks, at the current time. What follows is a starting off point for further investigation.

The Fountain Cavern, Shoal Bay
Big Spring Cave, Island Harbour

BAHAMAS
In the Bahamian archipelago there are over 40 cave sites and 4 submerged cave burials. Of note are the Lucayan Caverns located in the Grand Bahama Island.
